On April 2 2011, I had the pleasure of being the first
model/designer for the NB Heart Truth Fashion Gala.
What exactly is The Heart Truth?! The truth is that heart disease is the leading cause of death in Canadian women! That’s a scary and often unknown fact.
For the last 3 years, the New Brunswick Heart & Stroke Foundation has hosted the Heart Truth Fashion Gala, an awareness and fundraising event about women’s heart health. The official symbol of the event is the Red Dress, which represents the passion and strength of women and the desire to inspire us to take better care of our hearts...
Local fashion designers, all alumni of the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design, work with local celebrities to design and create one-of-a-kind gowns for the event. This year, I became the first designer to also be a model, and modeling my own creation no less. It was a bit stressful, organizing someone to help with fittings and wardrobe backstage. But thankfully my past instructors from the College Ellen Woolaver and Joanne Venart were always there, ready and willing to lend a hand. I thank them a million times over!!
Another crazy and awesome thing about this year’s event was that it was hosted by Canadian Fashion Icon Jeanne Beker!! I was so excited to meet the lady I’ve watched on Fashion Television my entire life. She was pleasant and friendly, always taking time to chat and have pictures taken.
I’ve been involved with this event since it began, making dresses and having volunteered on the committee. It’s a great cause and something every woman should be informed about. One day a year there’s a fabulous event that makes us think about ourselves, but as women need to take steps everyday to protect our heart health...our loved ones depend on it!
